George Kapriel Omartian

Omartian, George Kapriel, 82, died on April 29, in Watertown, Mass. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of forty years, Zoya Agavelyan Omartian, who was by his side during his convalescence and at his passing.

He leaves his sister, Sara Omartian of Springfield, Mass. George was preceded in death by his parents, Dertad K. and Gulkhatir Omartian, his brother, David, his sister, Areknaz, and just last month, by his beloved cousin, George Gabriel Omartian.

Additionally George leaves his nieces and goddaughters, Lisa Omartian of Springfield and Lauren Omartian of Watertown, as well as his mother-in-law, Nadezhda Agavelyan and brother-in-law, Zhirayr Agavelyan, both of Armenia.

George was born on April 6, 1936 in Springfield and attended Springfield Public Schools. In 1958, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

George over several decades pursued a career in marketing and real estate. He was active in the Boston area Armenian community and attended church services in Belmont, Cambridge and Watertown.

George had a generous heart towards friends, family and strangers alike in the United States and Armenia. In his free time, George delighted in lively conversation with good company and a good cup of coffee, with cream rather than milk! He enjoyed regular nature excursions and movie outings with his wife, personally tended to beds of roses, and reveled in the friendly competition of local backgammon tournaments.

He maintained close ties to his cousins, Apkar and Florence Omartian of New York, Vic and the late Vartanoush and Vinnetta Nicholls of the United Kingdom, Arthur and Karen Omartian of Vermont, Robert and Margaret Omartian of Connecticut, and to his cousins’ children and grandchildren.

A wake and funeral will be held on May 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Armenian Church, 2427 Wilbraham Road, Springfield, Mass. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark Armenian Church or to Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church, 145 Brattle Street, Cambridge, Mass. 02138, St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church of Greater Boston, 38 Elton Avenue Watertown, Mass. 02472.
